The journey through the Lambir Mountains is the most remarkable stage
of the travel through the Northern Sarawak highway.
The steep climbs, the many winding punctuated by vistas and the
overpowering presence of the primary rainforest leave a lasting impression
on the traveller. For the geologist, the large number of outcrops cut on
the side of the road provide an additional source of interest, documenting
large tracts of the Middle Miocene Lambir Formation.
On the way from Bekenu to Miri, the spectacular Entulang outcrop
exposes the contact
between the Setap and the Lambir Formations. This key outcrop is followed
further along the road by various sections referred to as "Liam",
before the Lambir National Park be reached.
Clicking on this outcrop icon will take you to the following screen,
where clicking on the
would
take you to a stratigraphic column
from which you will then be able to click on various thumbnails such as
this one
.
The thumbnails all take you to full sized detailed pictures which include
annotated narrations.
The opulence of the rain forest can be appreciated all along the main
road. Further towards Miri, larger outcrops are carved in the escarpments
of the road.
Find out more about the geology of the area by a virtual visit
through these outcrops, and on your way stop at Lambir for a stroll
through the rainforest.
