Student Excursion - SM St Joseph, Miri

28th October 2000: A group of some 20 students from SM St Joseph, Miri, were given an introduction to the geological features of the Miri Airport Road outcrop by Charlie Lee (in the white t-shirt). The weather was excellent in contrast to the daily rain of the previous 2 weeks.

It was a new subject to them and initially they were a little hesitant to ask questions. But as the session progressed, their interest became more obvious and they warmed up quite a bit. By the time the group ended down at the third poster, there was quite a reasonable q&a happening. At the end of the session Charlie brought out a collection of miscellaneous fossils and to his pleasure, found that one or two members of the group could recognise them (Ammonites and Trilobites). Although these fossils are much much older than the rocks at this outcrop, they served to illustrate some of the the diversity seen in nature. More importantly, it was interesting to find out that there was quite a bit of interest in these students for nature and the earth sciences.

The session ended on a discussion on various inter-related topics like the effects of giant meteors hitting the earth, dinosaurs dying off, global warming and the ozone layer etc etc.

The students have promised to write up a report on their visit which will be posted here when ready.
