Features of Interest
Canada Hill, especially the area around well Miri-1, has a
significant place in the history of modern Miri. This is where the oil
industry in the State started, with the successful drilling of well Miri-1
in December 1910. The growth of the oil industry has help to transform
Miri from a small fishing village at the turn of the century into a modern
and prosperous town today. Besides the rich history, the area around well
Miri-1 offers visitors a stunning panoramic view of Miri town and the
surrounding countryside, including Lambir Hills and Gunung Mulu on a clear
day.
Site Layout & Design
The area surrounding well Miri-1 has been recently developed and
beautified by the Miri council. Present effort is therefore minimal,
involving only the setting of the information boards at and around Miri-1,
including:
Two information boards at well Miri-1, providing detailed information on
the early exploration history and tracing its development in the Miri
area. Geological information of the Miri Field will also be provided to
help the visitors understand and visualised the process of hydrocarbon
exploration, from exploring to production.
One information board on the hill side facing Miri town, with photos and
text to help visitors identify major landmarks in town and offshore (eg.
West Lutong Platform).
One information board on the hill side facing the south, with photos and
text to help visitors identify major geographical features like Lambir
Hills and Gunung Mulu and the vast peat swamp forests. Costs Cost should
be minimal as access and parking is available. Cost will be on the
production and setting up of the information boards, estimated to be RM500
each, totaling RM2,000 for four information boards.
